GSE Academic programs
a. Academic Programs in International, Comparative, and Global Studies in Education
The Department of Educational Leadership and Policy provides a number of Ph.D. and General Masters programs and concentrations within programs dealing with international, comparative and global studies in education. These are designed both for international students who may return to their countries of origin as scholars, policy analysts, or administrators in schools, universities, ministries, development agencies, or non-governmental organizations, or US students who may be interested in internationally-related careers in colleges or universities, international agencies, or non-governmental organizations.
Comparative and Global Studies in Education. Comparative education (referred to as Comparative and Global Studies in Education) is a concentration within the State-approved Ph.D. Program in the Social and Philosophical Foundations in Education or the General Masters in Education. Comparative Education is an international (therefore also an intercultural) comparison of those institutions-especially schools, but also including religious establishments, community organizations., The GSE Web site for the program can be found at: www.gse.buffalo.edu/DC/CCGSE.
Higher Education. The scholarly study of higher education, along with Masters and Doctoral Programs in higher education, are well established at UB and at most US Universities. Graduates go on to careers in college or university administration or to related governmental and policy institutes. International graduate students (who frequently come from universities in their home countries) are often looking to careers in universities, state ministries, or development or other multinational agencies.
Educational Administration. Educational Administration, dealing principally with elementary and secondary schools and with the preparation of their leaders and policy analysts, is also a state-approved doctoral program that attracts international students.
Sociology of Education. Sociology of education is the largest of the concentrations within the Social and Philosophical Foundations of Education doctoral programs, and is one of the UB Graduate School of Education's most widely recognized and respected academic areas.
The Center for Comparative and Global Studies in Education. CCGSE is a Graduate School of Education-wide center for coordinating scholarly activities, visitors, and seminars, although the focus has been primarily on the international research and activities of the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy. The principal research activity in the Center is the multi-year, Ford Foundation financed International Comparative Higher Education Finance and Accessibility Project.
b. TESOL
(An Ed.M. with a concentration in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL; non-certification track) is available for those not interested in certification as an ESL teacher in the State of New York. Doctoral programs in foreign and second language education are also available. These programs provide a comprehensive background in theory, practice, and research for those who aspire to academic appointments in universities or colleges, or leadership roles in school systems.
c. Singapore Counseling Program
The Master's of Education (M.Ed.) in School Counseling curriculum has been modified to fit a modular, year-round format and tailored to be culturally relevant to the Singaporean schools. The program consists of 11 courses totaling 36 credit hours; most courses consist of two-week modules of intensive teaching, in addition to Internet and other technology-based activities.
d. English Language Institute (ELI)
The English Language Institute offers English language instruction, cultural orientation, and preacademic training to international students, scholars, and professionals on an intensive as well as on a per-course basis. ELI conducts the Intensive English Program (IEP), which specializes in preparing students for university study in the United States; the English as a Second Language Program (ESLP), for students enrolled in academic programs at the university; a part-time Evening Program for Buffalo-area professionals, as well as overseas and customized programs offering language-learning and teacher-training opportunities both on campus and in other countries.
