Questions about the Online Application:


1. Can I get a paper application sent to me?

No, we only accept online applications. The application is available at www.gse.buffalo.edu/apply

2. What if I forgot my user name and password for the online application?

On the application login page click in the link that says "click here if you forgot your password". You will then be asked to enter your email address and your password will be emailed to you. The email address you enter must match the email address on your application form. 3. Do I need to submit GRE or MAT test scores?

Not all programs require test scores. Check the requirements for your specific program to see if you need to take the exam and have the results sent to UB. The program listings and their requirements can be found at the 'Apply Online' page

4. Do I need to submit TOEFL scores?

Command of the English language is essential for successful graduate study. If English is not the student's first language, he/she is required to demonstrate English proficiency before admission to a program. This requirement is usually met by taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The minimum score for admission varied by program. If the TOEFL score falls below the program minimum, the student may have to attend a summer intensive English language program or a full fall or spring semester program. Detailed information on the TOEFL, as well as exceptions to the requirement, are included with the application information for international applicants.

5. Where do I send my test scores?

For the GRE Exam:
  • Indicate University code 2925
  • Indicate department code 2005 for Counseling, School and Educational Psychology Programs
  • Indicate department code 3001 for Educational Leadership and Policy Programs
  • Indicate department code 3301 for Learning and Instruction Programs
For the MAT Exam:
  • Indicate that you want your scores sent to University at Buffalo or SUNY University at Buffalo. It is important that you do not confuse this with College at Buffalo, which is a different institution.
For the TOEFL Exam:
  • Indicate school code 2925 for all programs and department code 85 for all programs except educational administration programs where you should indicate department code 01.

6. Do I need to submit letters of recommendation?

Some programs do require letters of recommendation. Check the information for your specific program to find out if and how many letters are needed and whom they should come from.

8. What are the deadlines for having my application submitted?

Application deadlines are different for each program. Check the information for your specific program to find out when the deadlines are. Some programs only admit students to begin study in the fall semester.

9. Do I need to send transcripts to UB with my application?

Yes, you must send official transcripts form all institutions you have previously attended. These should be sent directly from those institutions. This may take time so we encourage you to request them as soon as possible.

10. How do I have official transcripts sent to UB?

You must contact the registrar of each college or university that you have attended and ask them to send official transcripts to UB.

11. What address should I use to send my transcripts to UB?

12. What should I include in my statement of career objectives?

Your statement of career objectives should be a detailed statement of your career objectives and plans. It should say how the degree program you are applying for will help you achieve those objectives and plans.

13. Do I need to submit an essay in addition to my statement of career objectives?

When you are completing the online application an area for the essay will appear if it is required for your program. An essay topic or question will also appear that is specific to your program. If the essay section is there then your program requires both a statement of career objectives and an essay.

14. How can I pay my application fee?

You can pay your application fee by credit card as part of the online application or you can pay it by mail. All fees must be in US funds and payable to the University at Buffalo. Application fees are non-refundable. The application fee is $50.00.

15. When will I find out if I have been accepted?

If the program you are applying to has an application deadline you should receive a decision within 6-8 weeks after that deadline. If your program has a rolling admission process you should receive a decision within 6-8 weeks after your application is complete. An application is complete once it had been submitted on line and once all supporting documentation (transcripts, test scores, letters of recommendation) has been received by the Office of Graduate Admissions.

16. What is the cost of attending UB?

International students must show proof of sufficient financial means to cover all costs of their education. Information about those costs and the form that is needed to verify compliance is available at wings.buffalo.edu/intled/admissions/forms.html

17. What do I have to show to verify my financial ability to attend UB?

You must show financial documents to verify your ability to support your study in the US. Information about the required documentation is available at wings.buffalo.edu/intled/admissions/forms.html

18. Is there financial assistance available to graduate students in GSE?

Fellowships and assistantships, including tuition scholarships may be available through individual departments. Limited part-time employment on campus is available for international students.

19. How do I get a student visa to study at UB?

Once you apply and are admitted to UB, UB will issue an I-20 form to you. The I-20 form is the Certificate of Visa Eligibility form that you will need to apply for an F-1 student visa. 23. I can't find the program I am looking for on the GSE web page.

You should start by visiting the Prospective Students section. The program information is organized in several ways to help you find the correct program. 24. Is there financial support offered by the Graduate School of Education?

26. Do I need to take the GRE or MAT test?

29. What undergraduate GPA does UB look for in making admissions decisions?

Generally UB looks for a successful undergraduate record. Each specific program sets the minimum GPA requirements for that program. Information on these requirements can be found with the information on each program on the programs page.

30. What are the requirements for admissions?

To apply for admission, prospective students should complete an online application, making sure to indicate the degree or certification program for which they are applying. A nonrefundable fee must accompany the application in order for it to be processed. Prospective students may apply to one program only in the school, and should arrange with all the institutions of higher learning that they have attended to provide the department with official copies of their transcripts. Certain programs may also require test scores or other information. All credentials must be received before the deadline specified by the department. When all records are complete and the application has been reviewed, the department will notify applicants whether or not they have been accepted. Admission decisions are not based on any one test or criterion but rather on a combination of measures.

31. What are the undergraduate study requirements for admissions into a GSE Program?

Undergraduate study requirements vary according to the program you are interested in. Lists of acceptable majors are available for the programs that have specific requirements. In general, evidence of a completed undergraduate bachelors degree is required before you can be admitted to any graduate program. Many doctoral programs also require evidence of a completed masters degree. More information on each program and the specific requirements is available on the programs page.

32. Do I need letters of recommendation?

Some programs do require letters of recommendation. Check the information for your specific program to find out if and how many letters are needed and whom they should come from.

34. Will I be interviewed as part of the admissions process?

Some programs do require an interview. If your program has the requirement you will be contacted to set up the interview date and time after your completed application has been received. The notification may come by email so please check the email address you listed on your resume regularly.
