TEI Curricular Options/Certification Titles
Early Childhood/Childhood
The curricular options listed below are designed specifically for graduate students, without an undergraduate degree in education, who wish to teach grades 1-6, or birth through grade 2, or birth through grade 6.

Childhood Education, grades 1-6
Childhood Education, grades 1-6 with bilingual option
Early Childhood Education, birth-grade 2
Early Childhood Education, birth-grade 2 with bilingual option
Early Childhood Education/Childhood Education, birth-grade 6
Certification titles include:
- Initial/Professional (Initial Certification combined with a Master’s degree): This includes preparation for initial certification, and a Master’s degree.
Professional (Master’s degree): This degree in combination with other New York State requirements will help teachers obtain professional certification.
Adolescence (Grades 7-12)/Adolescence, with a Middle Childhood Extension (Grades 5-12)
Students interested in teaching at the secondary level can select from a wide range of options, including English, Languages Other Than English (French, German, Italian, Latin and Spanish), Math, Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science and Physics), and Social Studies.

Certification titles include:
- Initial Certification (Certificate of Advanced Study; Grades 7 - 12): This program will prepare students for New York State Initial Certification.
Initial/Professional (Initial Certification combined with a Master’s degree; Grades 5 - 12): This includes preparation for Initial Certification, and a Master’s degree.
Professional (Master’s degree; Grades 7 - 12 or Grades 5 - 12): This degree in combination with other New York State requirements will help teachers obtain professional certification.
All Grades
GSE also offers teacher certification in the following curricular areas that span all grades, including Music Education, English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and Literacy Specialist (birth-grade 6, grades 5-12).
Certification titles include:
- Initial Certification (Certificate of Advanced Study) (Music only): This program will prepare students for New York State Initial Certification.
Initial/Professional (Initial Certification combined with a Master’s degree) (Music and ESOL): This includes preparation for Initial Certification, and a Master’s degree.
