Scholarships and Fellowships
Current LIS students may apply for scholarships and fellowships from state library agencies, national and state library associations, local libraries, academic institutions, and foundations who give financial assistance to those who are pursuing graduate level education in an ALA-accredited library school program. Some of these opportunities are for those in the early stages of study, others are aimed at those who are graduating.
A. R. Zipf Fellowship in Information Management
Deadline: April 1
Details: This fellowship is awarded annually to a student who is enrolled in graduate school, in the early stages of study, and who shows exceptional promise for leadership and technical achievement in information management. Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States. The amount of the award (in 2006) is $10,000. Completed applications must be mailed to CLIR and postmarked no later than April 1. The winner will be notified by May 31.

The Alice L. Haltom Educational Fund
Deadline: May 1
Details: The Alice L. Haltom Educational Fund was established to promote and advance the field of Records and Information Management and related disciplines through study, education and research. This is a two-part program where scholarships are awarded to college students specializing in programs leading to careers in Records and Information Management and grants given to organizations or individuals within the Records and Information Management field. The scholarship amount varies, dependent on the students' curriculum and the courses that qualify under our program.

American Association of Law Libraries (AALL)

Details: Annual awards scholarships are granted to assist individuals in achieving their goal of becoming a law librarian. Minorities are particularly encouraged to apply.

American Association of School Librarian's Workshop Scholarship
Deadline: March 1
Details: The scholarship is awarded to a full-time student preparing to become a school library media specialist at the preschool, elementary, or secondary level. The recipient must pursue graduate level education in an ALA-accredited library school program or in a school library media program that meets the ALA curriculum guidelines for the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). The $3,000 scholarship is donated by Jay W. Toor, president, Library Learning Resources. The scholarship process is typically open from October to March 1.

American Indian Library Association Scholarship
Deadline: April 1
Details: Given by the American Indian Library Association, it is for American Indian/Alaskan Native students who are enrolled in or have been accepted to and will enroll in a master's degree program in an American Library Association-accredited library school. One scholarship will be awarded in June for the coming academic year. Applications will be accepted beginning in November.

American Library Association Spectrum Initiative
Deadline: March 1
Details: The ALA's Spectrum Initiative scholarship is a one-time, non-renewable $5,000 award paid in two installments directly to the recipient. Recipients must begin a program by the fall semester following the award, funds will be forfeited if enrollment is delayed. Recipients must be enrolled at the time of the second installment, or they will forfeit this portion of the award. Recipients are announced at the ALA Annual Conference in June, two $2,500 installments are awarded in September and January. The Department of Library and Information Studies was the first library school to match scholarships awarded by the ALA's Spectrum Scholarship program: up to $5,000 in ALA funding for up to four students.
Ann Gibson Scholarship Award
Deadline: May 31
Details: The Ann Gibson Scholarship is a $1,000 award given annually by the Youth Services Section of the New York Library Association to honor the memory of Ann Gibson, a storyteller, librarian and teacher. You must be currently enrolled in an MLS program, have completed at least 18 credit hours, and are directing your studies toward youth services in a public or school library. Other requirements are specified in a document Scholarship Judging Criteria available at the NYLA web page below. Notification by September 1.

Association of Library Services to Children Scholarships
Deadline: March 1
Details: These scholarships are for individuals pursuing a master's or advanced degree in children's librarianship. The applicants must be accepted but must not have begun coursework at a library school accredited by the American Library Association that offers a full range of courses in children's materials and library services to children. A letter from the school indicating the applicant is under consideration will be acceptable to begin the application process.

ATLA Bibliography Grant
Deadline: January 15
Details: The ATLA Bibliography Grant is given annually by the Publications Committee of the American Theological Library Association (ATLA) to one or more bibliographers or indexers to aid in the development of a work that provides access to a significant body of literature within the fields of theological and/or religious studies. The scope and subject matter are broadly conceived, with the intent of encouraging bibliographical essays or annotated bibliographies, especially by persons undertaking their first major project in this area.

Blackwell's Scholarship Award

Details: The Blackwell's Scholarship Award honors the author(s) of the year's outstanding monograph, article or original paper in the field of acquisitions, collection development and related areas of resource development in libraries. The award consists of a $2,000 scholarship to a U.S. or Canadian library school. The eligible applicant is a student concentrating in the acquisitions or collection development areas. This scholarship is sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS).

California Library Association's Reference Service Press Fellowship

Details: The CLA Reference Service Press Fellowship encourages college seniors, college graduates, and beginning library school students to prepare for a career in reference/information service librarianship. Applicants must be a college graduate or college senior accepted to an accredited MLS program. A graduate student already enrolled in an accredited MLS program (part- or full-time) may also apply with no more than eight credits completed by June. Applicants also must be either a California resident in an ALA-accredited library school masters program or a resident of any state planning to attend an accredited library school masters program in California. One fellowship of $3,000 is awarded annually.

Century Scholarship - American Library Association

Details: The Southern California Chapter of the Special Libraries Association is accepting applications for the Karen Sternheim Memorial Scholarship. King V. Hostick Award (The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency and the Illinois State Historical Society)

National Security Education Program (NSEP) David L. Boren Fellowships
Deadline: January 30
Details: Awards are made for a minimum of one and a maximum of six academic semesters (24 months). A maximum of $12,000 is awarded for up to two semesters of overseas study, and the total level of support is $30,000 for a combined overseas and domestic program. Applicants must be U.S. citizens enrolled in an accredited U.S. college or university within the United States and must study a modern language other than English. Under most circumstances, upon graduation, Boren Fellows must work in the departments of Defense, Homeland Security, State, or the intelligence community.

Rittenhouse Award - Medical Library Association

Roger K. Summit Scholarship for North America

Details: The Roger K. Summit Scholarship, awarded annually by Dialog, was established to honor the company's founder, Dr. Roger K. Summit, for his outstanding contributions to the field of information science. Rovelstad Scholarship in International Librarianship

Details: The Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) is pleased to announce a scholarship for a student of library and information science to attend the World Library and Information Congress of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA). W. David Rozkuszka Scholarship - American Library Association

Details: The W. David Rozkuszka Scholarship provides financial assistance to an individual who is currently working with government documents in a library and is trying to complete a masters degree in library science. This award, established in 1994, is named after W. David Rozkuszka, former Documents Librarian at Stanford University. The award recipient receives $3,000. The Awards Committee of ALA GODORT welcome applications by December 1, 2007 for the David Rozkuska Scholarship. Awards will be presented at the 2008 Annual Conference in Anaheim, CA and will be selected by the Awards Committee at Midwinter in January 2008.

West Excellence in Law Librarianship Scholarships

Details: The West Excellence in Law Librarianship Scholarships program encourages leadership and excellence within the profession.The program awards scholarships of $2,500 each year to several full-time students working toward graduate-level library science degrees with a demonstrated interest in law librarianship.
