* Special Education Ph.D. applicants must submit GRE scores only; international applicants to the Ph.D. program in foreign and second language education must submit scores from the GSE and the Test of Written English (TWE) in addition to the TOEFL.

Special Requirements for Certain Program Areas

Secondary Mathematics

A three hour entrance exam is required. The exam is given on an individual basis and you may arrange to take the exam by calling (716) 645-2455 ext. 1141. You should call at least 24 hours in advance.

TESOL and Foreign Language Education

There is only a fall admission for this program.
Applicants to this program are required to submit 2 confidential recommendations.
Even though you may be certified in another area, New York State requires student teaching in TESOL in order to be certified in teaching English as a second language.  The only exception to this is if you have student taught in a foreign language.

Special Education

The Ph.D. in Special Education is a joint program between the University at Buffalo and Buffalo State College. The program is designed for those who already hold a master's degree in special education. A combination of coursework, internships, field experiences, and original research provides a comprehensive background in special education for those who aspire to academic appointments in universities or colleges, or leadership roles in school systems.
