Application Requirements

Application requirements for the Combined Advanced Certificate and the Master's degree option
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution is required.
  • Applicants must ensure that they have an acceptable major that can lead to New York State teacher certification. University at Buffalo's list of acceptable majors is available at: http://www.gse.buffalo.edu/programs/tei/requirements.asp
  • Due to the sequential structure of the program, applications are considered for fall admission only, with a deadline of February 1.
  • Applications are online. All sections of the application must be completed before submission electronically. The application cannot be revised after it has been submitted.
  • To be reviewed for admission to the program, applicants must submit the following:
  • Completed online application
  • Official transcripts from all colleges attended
  • $50.00 nonrefundable application fee
  • Three letters of recommendation for those applying to the bilingual extension
  • Admission is competitive: academic record, written statements, and interviews are basic components.
  • There are no GREs required for the teacher certification program.

Application requirements for the Master's degree option
  • Applicants to the Master's program must have applied for, or received New York State initial or provisional teacher certification in the matching content area. If application for teacher certification is in process, proof of such application must be submitted. If already certified, a copy of proof of teacher certification is required.
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution is required.
  • Applications are considered for fall and spring admission, with a deadline of February 1 for fall and November 1 for spring admission.
  • Applications are online. All sections of the application must be completed before submission electronically. The application cannot be revised after it has been submitted.

Application Requirements for the Master's degree option in Childhood Education: Literacy Emphasis
  • The application deadline is February 1 for fall admission and October 1 for spring admission.
  • Applicants must have applied for, or received initial New York State teacher certification.
  • Copy of proof of teacher certification if already certified.
  • Complete online application.
  • Two letters of recommendation:
  • One letter that addresses your academic abilities and experiences.
  • One letter that addresses your teaching and/or professional experiences.
  • A clearly written and thoughtful statement of your career goals. (Career goals statement is read thoroughly by at least two faculty, so take care in preparing it. Not only should this goal statement be well written and clearly iterate your personal commitment to education and struggling readers, but it should address significant educational or social issues related to literacy, writing, language, culture, child development, classroom teaching, and struggling readers.
  • Official transcripts from each institution that you have attended
  • Application fee of $50.00 either electronically when you submit your application, or by mail to the address below.
