Social Studies: Adolescence (7-12 or 5-12)
Programs Offered: Ph.D., Ed.M., Initial Certification, Professional Certification
The Ed.M. program in Social Studies Education is designed for people who are currently teaching or who intend to teach in elementary or secondary schools. The program examines major issues in social studies education as well as ways of enhancing classroom practice.
In general, students with a baccalaureate degree in history or one of the social sciences or in elementary education, who already have or are pursing New York State provisional or initial certification, take a minimum of 18 credit hours in professional education courses and at least 12 credit hours at the graduate level in one or more of the following areas; history, political science, economics, geography, anthropology, or sociology.
Students who have initial certification at the adolescence level can elect for an Ed.M., which qualifies them for professional certification at the middle school child and adolescence levels. In addition, students in programs in early childhood or childhood education may choose to concentrate in social studies.
