Program Requirements

Programs in foreign and second language education are of the following types: Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), foreign language education, and bilingual education.

The program leading to an Ed.M. in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) accommodates graduate students whose professional goals include teaching English to speakers of other languages overseas, in American institutions of higher learning, or in secondary schools. One track -- English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) -- leads to certification to teach in New York State public schools. The Ed.M. program in foreign language education is designed for those who intend to teach Languages Other Than English (LOTE) in the United States, particularly in public schools. Courses deal with current theories and their implications for teaching methods, materials, and assessment. The languages offered include certification in French, German, Italian, Latin, and Spanish. An Ed.M. with a concentration in TESOL (non-certification track) is available for those not interested certification as an ESL teacher in the State of New York. Doctoral programs in foreign and second language education are also available. These programs provide a comprehensive background in theory, practice, and research for those who aspire to academic appointments in universities or colleges, or leadership roles in school systems.

The progam in Foreign and Second Language Education serves the needs of master's degree and doctoral students who teach non-primary languages in a variety of contexts.

NOTE: The information on this page describes our program for candidates who have received provisional certification prior to February 1, 2004. If you have received initial certification after February 1, 2004, please click here.
