General Education
The Master's in General Education is a Graduate School of Education degree that was designed for the student whose professional objectives cannot be satisfied by one of the existing master's degrees. The program does not lead to initial New York State certification, but may fulfill the Master's requirement for permanent certification in certain areas.
NOTE: The information on this page describes our program for candidates who have received provisional certification prior to February 1, 2004. If you have received initial certification after February 1, 2004, please click here.
Degree Requirements
- Your graduate program must contain at least 33 hours of graduate work.
- Sixteen of the 33 hours must be taken in the Graduate School of Education.
- Your work is completed with either an examination or a project.
Procedure
- Review all the master's degrees in the Department of Learning and Instruction to see whether one of the degrees meets your professional objectives.
- Make appointments and meet with members of the faculty involved in any of the department's master's degrees in which you are interested.
- If none of the existing master's degree programs meets your professional objectives: (a) find a faculty member from the Department of Learning and Instruction who may be willing to be your advisor; (2) meet with that faculty person to discuss your professional objectives; and (3) if he or she is willing to be your advisor, complete the application for admission to the Department of Learning and Instruction.
- Once admitted to the program, work with your advisor to design your program using the Application to Candidacy form. When the Application to Candidacy is agreed to by you and your advisor, you and your advisor sign the document, and you submit it to Room 505 Baldy Hall for submission to the Graduate Degrees Committee. The Application to Candidacy should be submitted before you have taken 12 hours of course work.
- You may transfer up to six hours of course work into the program; more than 6 hours of transfer is improbable.
- Once your Application to Candidacy has been approved, there is also a procedure for making changes.
- If you take an Independent Study as part of your program, the Informal Course Description form must be completed and submitted.
