English: Adolescence (7-12 or 5-12)
Programs Offered: Ph.D., Professional Ed.M., Initial/Professional Ed.M., Initial Certification
English education is concerned with the teaching of literature and composition in secondary schools and colleges and universities. Programs take a broad humanistic approach and emphasize research and practice in language, writing, and response to literature. Students study theory, research, and practice. Graduate students tutor and conduct research in local schools and are encouraged to publish their work and present papers at local, state, and national conferences. Students who have initial certification at the adolescence level can elect for an Ed.M., which qualifies them for professional certification at the middle child and adolescence levels. Doctoral programs in English education may include courses in such areas as linguistics, anthropology, sociology, and women's studies, in addition to courses in the department and GSE.
