Social and Philosophical Foundations
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)
The Social and Philosophical Foundations (SPF) area is a multidisciplinary program employing the methods and insights of history, philosophy and the social sciences to examine critically educational ideas, practices and institutions. Its program is built on the premise that the very nature of education and the complex relations between education and society in general cannot be grasped comprehensively by any single academic discipline. Graduate study in the area has two related aspects. There is the general study necessary for an overall view of education. The doctorate, however, entails the sharply focused mastery of one of the standard foundational fields including Comparative Education and Sociology of Education. The flexibility of the SPF program - sharply tuned to the needs of students as well as the demands of scholarship - enables students when necessary to construct programs of advanced study that cut across traditional academic lines. Our goal is to prepare students for intelligent and humane leadership in a variety of educational careers and settings - in teaching, research, administration and policy making.
