Dear Prospective Student,
I am pleased to note your interest in the programs offered by the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy (ELP). Our degree programs in educational administration, social foundations and higher education administration prepare individuals to work creatively in a range of educational institutions and settings. Graduates of these exciting programs can be found in leadership positions, nationally and internationally, in public and private elementary and secondary schools; colleges and universities, businesses; non-governmental organizations; local, state, and federal governments.
The department focuses on how educational policy is formulated and implemented; the effects of culture and history on educational structures; the way schools and universities are organized; the challenges of urban education, school reform, and educational change. While the department offers a unique range of programs, it also offers students the opportunity to pursue coursework beyond the department, the Graduate School of Education, and the university. Students working with committed faculty mentors may design their degree programs to include courses from other schools within the university, such as the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Architecture and Planning.
The faculty are dedicated to the students, socially committed, and focused on issues related to cultural diversity in school and social reform within American society. While the department's emphasis is on American education, the combination of an internationally experienced faculty and a diverse student body helps bring international perspectives to the examination of American educational problems.
