Singapore School Counseling

Program Structure

The Master's of Education (Ed.M.) in School Counseling program in Singapore fits a modular, year-round format. It is tailored to be culturally relevant to Singapore schools and designed for working professionals who are pursuing an advanced degree on a part-time basis. The program is a hybrid of both direct face-to-face teaching as well as online instruction and consists of:

  • Thirteen courses offered over 18 months. (August 2008–December 2009)

  • Seven modules of intensive 2-weeks face-to-face teaching by faculty.
    For these intensive 2-week modules, a typical schedule will be as follows:

  • These two-week courses will be augmented by:
  • A two-week pre-course period which may require intensive reading, video-reviewing, and submission of reflection papers.
  • A post-course period which will involve some online discussions, on-line presentations and written projects and assignments.
  • Four interactive on-line courses with UB faculty spread over a 15-week or 6-week summer schedules (Please see course schedule for further information). These courses will require a review of weekly video-cast of instructor's lectures at student's own time and convenience, followed by an hour-long online group interactive session with the UB instructor. A technology orientation will be provided to help student access the online classes.

  • Two semester-long courses of field experience in the schools (January–May 2009, August–December 2009) supervised by experienced school counselors and clinical faculty. The field experiences will require:
  • At least 10 hours a week in the school setting (for a total of 400 hours for the year)
  • A total of 120 hours of face-to-face contact with students in individual and group counseling and classroom guidance
  • Weekly 2-hour group supervision with a clinical supervisor
  • At least 20 hours of individual supervision with qualified school supervisor
  • All fieldwork requirements meet the standards set the Ministry of Education as well as the Singapore Association for Counseling
