Teaching and Leading for Diversity

Program Requirements

Each student will work with an advisor affiliated with the ACTLD program (in addition to the student’s regular advisor if concurrently enrolled in a degree program). The student and the ACTLD advisor will develop an individualized program appropriate for the needs of the student, consisting of at least six courses (3 credits hours each, 18 credits total), distributed according to the following 3 guidelines:

(1) LAI 567 Improving Intercultural Interaction in Multicultural Classrooms is required of all ACTLD students.

(2) The individualized portion of the program includes at least one course from each of the following three basic ACTLD components:

  • Foundations of Diversity and Social Change
  • ELP 583 Gender and Education
  • ELP 585 Sociological Bases of Education
  • ELP 599 Special Topic: Critical Pedagogy and Educational Practice
  • ELP 632 Issues in Urban Schools Leadership
  • ELP 513 Special Topic: Cultural Diversity in Higher Education
  • ELP 515 New Futures in Higher Education
  • ELP 589 Education and Socialization
  • Intercultural Communication and Cultural Identity
  • LAI 580 Literature for Young Adults
  • CEP 549 Psychology of Women
  • CEP 634 Multicultural Counseling
  • LAI 512 Readings in Literature
  • LAI 518 English Education Advanced Composition Workshop: Writing Cultural Stories
  • LAI 681 Linguistics in Second Language Education
  • Diversity in School Practices
  • LAI 574 Teaching the Exceptional Learners in the Regular Education Classroom
  • ELP 595 Conflict Resolution and the Internet
  • LAI 537 Language Diversity and Literacy

(3) The remaining six credits may be chosen in any combination from the three basic ACTLD components.
