The
mission of the New Literacies Group (NLG) at the University
at Buffalo(UB) is the advancement of knowledge about and innovative
uses of multimodal literacies in the context of an increasingly
diverse society. The
NLG contributes to an expanding perspective on literacy -- from
a narrow focus on print text to the innovative notion of New Literacies.
New Literacies focus attention on the visual, auditory, performative
and other semiotic understandings necessary for constructing and
reconstructing print-mixed and non-print texts in the context
of social, institutional, and cultural discourses, relationships,
and inquiries. This focus includes, but is not limited to, computer-based
digital technologies that provide quick access to multiple modes
of representation, that is, digitally afforded multimodality.
In both in-school and out-of-school contexts, the NLG focuses
on multimodal literacies to mediate excellent teaching and learning
for millennial students.
Drs.
Bill Cope and Mary Kalantzis, the 2008 distinguished speakers,
gave a talk titled "Multiliteracies:
Ten Years Later" on Friday, February 22, 2008,
at North Campus, University at Buffalo. To download their
presentation slides, please click here.
The
New Literacies Group has recently become a member of the New
Media Consortium (NMC). NMC is an international not-for-profit
consortium of nearly 200 leading colleges, universities, museums,
corporations, and other learning-focused organizations dedicated
to the exploration and use of new media and new technologies.
The consortium serves as a catalyst for the development of new
applications of technology to support learning and creative
expression, and sponsors programs and activities designed to
stimulate innovation, encourage collaboration, and recognize
excellence among its member institutions.
