LIS GSA Mentoring Program

Mentors

By mentoring a new MLS student, you will help them feel at home in DLIS and UB, make some new friends, and be able to demonstrate your leadership to potential employers. This also looks great on your resume / CV!

Mentoring can occur via e-mail or in person. Mentors will be paired with one or two new students who have a career interest similar to yours. Mentors will answer questions the new students have about the department, UB, or the library field.

Since mentoring only takes a few hours a semester and can be done via e-mail, this is a great way to get involved even if you live in Rochester, and do not have a lot of extra time or a schedule that allows you to make meetings.

Mentees

If you are new to the department and finding yourself confused about DLIS, UB, Buffalo, etc., your LIS GSA has a program for you.

LIS GSA has a mentoring program to pair interested new students with a more experienced student in the department. This program does not take the place of official academic advisement, but compliments it by giving new students a chance to learn
the ropes from an old hand. So whether you are mulling over courses, trying to find your way around UB's maze of buildings and services, or just want to find the best place in town for wings, consider signing up for a mentor.

If you are interested in signing up for a mentor, please send an email with your contact information to the LIS GSA at lisgsa+mentor@gmail.com. Please enter Mentoring Program in the subject line.
