Continuing Education Units

What is a CEU?

The CEU (Continuing Education Unit) is a standardized unit of measurement used throughout the United States by educational institutions to record participation in non-credit (also called credit-free) education programs. One CEU is awarded for every 10 hours of participation in an organized continuing education experience under responsible sponsorship, capable direction, and qualified instruction.

How do Graduate School of Education CEU programs work?

Each CEU experience in the Graduate School of Education will specifically outline what is required to earn a CEU certificate. Most programs combine traditional classroom experiences with independent work that you perform online. Some experiences will use only traditional face-to-face instruction while still others will be entirely online. In all cases, reflection and feedback are key aspects of the continuing education experience at GSE.

How are CEUs used?

Recipients of CEUs may use them as evidence of their interest in continuing education, their participation in such programs, and their subsequent life and career enrichment through increased knowledge. Employers, in turn, may use CEUs as evidence of an employee's performance capabilities and for promotion consideration. Approved CEU programs are accepted by many boards and professional organizations.

How do you earn CEUs?

CEU's are earned upon completion of an approved GSE course/program. Your attendance at all sessions is required as well as a written record of your experiences and reflections. When these requirements are fulfilled and certified by a GSE continuing education professional, a certificate will be mailed to you.

What is the difference between a 'Program Fee' and a 'CEU Fee'?

A 'Program Fee' is the cost of the actual program you are attending. It covers the cost instruction. This may differ for each program.

A 'CEU Fee' is the cost of administrative and evaluation services. These are the costs incurred for establishing you as a CEU participant, managing your progress, evaluating and approving your reflective contributions and generating your certificates. The CEU fee is $10 per program. The fee is the same for each program.
