Parents Role In Child Literacy

Parents are the first influential people in a child's life and they play an important role in his/her literacy development, even before the child enters school. Research supports the view that parent and child literacy interaction is becoming successful.

In the fast moving world of today, it is sometimes very difficult to find time to read to the children. Reading and story telling need not necessarily be structured. Some children can hear the story even when they are physically doing some otherwork. A book can be read to a child even while waiting at the doctor's office or a story can be told when the child is playing with a toy.

It is never too early to begin reading books with your child. While reading a book, the pages can be turned slowly and the words can be read softly and slowly. This type of interaction helps the children learn to speak. The reading session, especially in the beginning stages, can be of short duration due to young children's short attention span.

Children would grow to be good readers and writers if they are exposed, at a young age, to reading with a parent.
